What Should Parents Wear for a Newborn Photoshoot?

27 January 2026 · 5 min read

Think soft, neutral, and timeless

Newborn photography ages best when the styling is quiet — think creams, oatmeal, warm greys, sage, dusty blush, soft caramel. Anything that would look at home in a linen wardrobe usually works beautifully in the images.

Coordinate, don't match

Matching outfits (all white shirts, all denim) can feel dated. Aim for two or three complementary tones and mix textures — a linen dress with a knit jumper, for example.

Fabrics that photograph well

  • Linen and cotton — soft drape, natural texture
  • Fine knits — cosy but not bulky
  • Silk and satin — for a slightly more editorial mood
  • Avoid stiff synthetics and heavy shiny fabrics

For mum

A long dress in a neutral tone is almost always the right answer — comfortable, flattering post-partum, and beautiful in photos. If you feed on demand, pick something with easy access.

For dad and siblings

Plain cream, oatmeal or dusty blue tops with soft trousers or jeans. Keep logos and busy patterns out of the frame.
