When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photography?
8 January 2026 · 5 min read

One of the first questions I get from London parents is simple: when is the best time to book a newborn photoshoot? The honest, gentle answer is — sooner than most people think. Newborns change every single day, and the tiny, curled, sleepy look most families dream about only lasts a short window.
The sweet spot: days 5 to 14
For traditional posed newborn photography, the ideal age is between 5 and 14 days old. In these first two weeks babies still curl naturally into womb-like poses, sleep deeply between feeds, and can be gently moved into safe, wrapped shapes. After around 3 weeks babies become more alert, their startle reflex is stronger, and baby acne often peaks — all of which makes a classic newborn session harder.
Book while you're still pregnant
Because that window is only 10 days wide, I encourage London mums and dads to reserve a session during pregnancy — usually around week 30 to 34. You don't need an exact date. I hold a soft slot around your due date and confirm the exact day once your baby arrives and you're home from hospital.
What if my baby is already older?
Please don't panic. Older newborns still photograph beautifully — we simply lean into awake, family-led, lifestyle images instead of tightly posed shots. Sitter sessions (around 6–9 months) and cake smash sessions (around 12 months) are also lovely milestones to plan.
Quick timeline
- Weeks 28–34 of pregnancy: reserve your newborn slot
- Days 1–4 after birth: rest, feed, recover
- Days 5–14: ideal newborn photoshoot window
- Days 15–28: gentle lifestyle sessions still work well
- 3+ weeks: awake, family and sibling-led images
Whenever you book, the goal is the same — a calm, safe, unhurried session where you leave with heirloom images of the tiniest version of your baby.
