Newborn Photoshoot at Home in London: What Really Happens

Almost every newborn session I photograph happens in the family's own home, somewhere across North London. Parents often worry their flat is too small, too dark or too messy. It never is. Here's honestly what happens, so you know exactly what you're booking.

How much space do I actually need?

One bright room and about two metres of floor space. That's it. I work out of a compact kit — a small posing beanbag, backdrops, wraps and a portable heater — and I set up in whichever room has the best window, usually a living room or nursery. I've photographed newborns in Camden studio flats and in six-bedroom Mill Hill houses, and the images look the same.

The light is more important than the decor

I photograph with natural window light wherever possible, so we choose the room by its window rather than its furniture. Nothing needs tidying — most of what you see in the finished photos is a metre-wide patch of blanket and your baby. Toys on the floor never make it into the frame.

Room temperature: the one thing I'll nag about

Newborns only relax into those curled, sleepy poses when they're properly warm. Please turn the heating up to around 24–26°C in the room we'll use, an hour before I arrive. It will feel too warm for you — that's the sign it's right for baby. I bring a heater as backup.

A typical timeline

• 0:00 — I arrive, we chat, kettle on, I quietly set up in your chosen room
• 0:15 — family, parent and sibling photos first, while everyone is fresh
• 0:45 — feed, change, cuddle; siblings are free to go and play
• 1:15 — gently wrapped and posed newborn portraits as baby settles
• 2:15 — details: tiny hands, feet, eyelashes, your hands holding theirs
• 2:45 — pack down; you have the rest of the day back

Safety at home

Every pose is baby-led and safety-trained. Anything that looks gravity-defying online is a composite of two separate images — I never leave a baby unsupported, and a parent's hands are always within reach. If your baby doesn't want a particular pose, we skip it. No session is worth an unsettled baby.

What it costs and how to book

Home sessions across North London start at £250 and include travel within my usual area, all props and outfits, and a private online gallery of hand-edited high-resolution images. The best time to book is your second or third trimester — I hold a soft slot around your due date and confirm the exact day once your baby is here.
